The Decking Superstore Siding Season Series: part 1

Siding your home, (or shed or garage) is probably the one renovation project that will most dramatically improve your building’s appearance. What’s more, not only does new siding literally give your home a facelift, but it can also significantly improve its curb appeal and resale value. So, when’s the best time to undertake your siding project? Without a doubt, the fall. After spending the summer with a house full of family, the beginning of fall marks a return to reality with kids heading back to school and routines looking a little bit more like their pre-COVID selves. This quieter time is ideal to plan and start a renovation.

Weather-wise, the fall’s a great time as well as we don’t usually have the extreme heat of summer that can make working outdoors uncomfortable. If you’ve decided the time’s right to start your siding project, the next step is to make some design decisions. This is definitely the most exciting stage, as this is your chance to give your home a fresh, new look. Here are a few tips and pointers to keep in mind:

If you’re adding an addition, or building a separate structure like a garage, you may want to match your existing siding. If you’re able to bring a sample into us at The Decking Superstore we’ll likely be able to find your match. However, if you own an older home it’s possible the manufacturer is no longer around, or they may not make that style any more. In this case we can try and match the product with another brand, or we can suggest something very different that compliments your existing siding and creates a whole new look. Either way, we have the product range to cover you.

Speaking of product range, there are a lot of products on the market now, and new ones entering all the time. While that’s good news in that it gives homeowners a lot of options, it can also make choosing the right product for your home a lot more difficult. We’re going to cover siding products and profiles in an upcoming article, but in our opinion the best options for siding are natural hard woods (such as Ipe siding) and soft woods or composite material siding. Both come in a wide range of looks and dimensions and we can help you make an informed decision on which siding product is right for you.

One last point to keep in mind concerns the material under your siding. Residing is your best opportunity to make sure your house wrap is up to code and performing well. Different regions require different codes, but ensuring you have proper insulation and a moisture barrier will almost always reduce your heating and cooling costs, often making it well worth the added cost and effort of putting them in during your siding project.
